Feisty
Fawn Tips for A135-S2246 Laptop
I
decided the other night to
upgrade my Toshiba A135-S2246 laptop to Feisty Fawn from Edgy Eft. The reason
being that Openoffice.org 2.2 downloaded from Openoffice.org website had the
worst looking fonts. When I upgraded to Feisty the fonts were
now perfect, that problem solved. A few other inconsistencies
arose that thankfully Ubuntu forums folks being the genuises they are
had the solution. I will keep this section updated with
Feisty tips.
Toshiba
Laptop ATI SB450 Audio no Sound
- This is a big
problem for people with laptops equipped with
ATI SB450 sound cards. I have only tested this with a Toshiba
laptop, but other SB450 equipped laptops should work. Verify
that you have an ATI SB450 sound card by typinf lspci
in a terminal. If you have this sound card you will have
something like this in the resulting output in one of the lines of text:
- 00:14.2
Audio device [0403]: ATI Technologies Inc SB450 HDA Audio
- Once this is verified then
proceed.
- The folks on the
forum had the solution (I don't know what
I would do without them). This solution worked for me.
To use the fix I used continue.
- Open a terminal
and type the following: Note:
If you get an error then that just means the hardware is
active, proceed.
- sudo
rmmod snd-hda-intel
- sudo
modprobe snd-hda-intel probe_mask=8 model=3stack
- Once this is done
the type the following again in a terminal:
- sudo
gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
- Add the
following line at the very end of the file
- options
snd-hda-intel probe_mask=8 model=3stack
- save
and exit
- reboot
the machine and your sound card should be working.
Mute Speakers when Headphones are used
- This
has been a big deal for folks with Intel HDA type sound cards.
The fix is as follows. Information about this fix is gotten
from here.
- Update ASLA to the latest (1.0.16 as of this writing). I have instructions here.
- In you /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base add the following line.
- options
snd-hda-intel probe_mask=8 model=lenovo
- save and exit
- reboot the machine and when you insert headphones the speakers will mute.
Logoff
Black Screen
- This was really
annoying as the only way to get back to
Ubuntu was to hold down the power button until the computer shut off
and then press power again. Fortunately the folks at Ubuntu
forums had the fix. This procedure worked on my Toshiba
laptop.
- Open a terminal
and type the following:
- sudo
gedit /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf-custom
- Add the follwing in the [daemon]
section
- AlwaysRestartServer=true
- Save and exit
- Reboot the machine
and the problem should be cured.
I hope these help.
