Linux/Unix - Linux and Unix have an MD5 checksum checker included with nearly every distribution.  To verify the checksum type the following in a terminal.  If you are going to create CD using K3B, K3B has built in MD5 checksum ability.

md5sum <ubuntu .iso file>
 

Windows - Unfortunately Windows has no built in MD5 checksum check so you will have to download the software.  There is a free MD5 checksum software called winMd5Sum, follow instructions here.


MD5 Sums on OSX

Mac OSX - Follow the Linux instructions and substitute md5 for md5sum in the terminal command.


Create Ubuntu CD

Once you have downloaded the .iso file and verified the file integrity it is time to create a bootable CD.  Don't worry the .iso files will contain everything you need.

I have instructions for several CD/DVD burning software packages.  I recommend that you burn the CD at 8X or slower.  Make sure to insert a black 700MB CD in your burner.  If you cannot find your CD/DVD burning program then consult your CD/DVD burning program help file.  To get one of the free burning programs please click on the links provided.

Infrarecorder (Free CD burner compatible with Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP/Vista)
Go to Actions--->Burn Image and navigate to the .iso file location.  Select Open then select OK to burn the disc.

Nero (An excellent CD/DVD burning package for 2000/XP/Vista.  Nero is not free)
Go to File--->Burn Image and navigate to the .iso file location.  Nero will then take you to the CD writing dialog.

CD Burner XP Pro (Free CD/DVD burning program for XP and 2000 only)
Select New Compilation then select the first option to burn CD from .iso.  After this is done, select File--->Write CD from ISO.  This will bring up a new window.  Select the ... button in the uppper right corner and navigate to the .iso file.  Select Write Disc.

Roxio (CD/DVD burning application for Windows XP and Vista, Roxio is not free)
Select File--->Burn from Disc Image File and navigate to the .iso file location.  Select Open and then select Burn.

K3B (A free CD/DVD burning program for Linux)
Select Tools--->Burn CD Image.  Next navigate to the .iso file and select Open.  The MD5 checksum is automatically computed so you can verify from above.  Select the Burn button and wait for burning process to complete.

Gnomebaker (A free CD/DVD burning program for Linux)
Select Tools--->Burn CD Image.  Navigate to the .iso file and then select Start.

Brasero (A free CD/DVD burning program for Linux)
Select Project--->New Project--->Burn Image.  Navigate to the .iso and select Burn.

Apple Disk Utility (Included with OS X)
1. Launch Disk Utility Applications--->Utilities--->Disk Utility
2. Drag the .iso to the sidebar of the Disk Utility main window.
3. Select the ISO where you just dragged it, and choose Menu--->Image--->Burn
4. In Disk Utility, ensure that the Verify burn checkbox is ticked (you may need to click on the disclosure triangle to see the checkbox).
5. Insert a blank CD--->Burn.
6. Check that verification (if available) was successful. If verification was not available, at least make sure that a sample of directories on the CD can be accessed by the finder.


There you are, you now have a copy of Ubuntu on CD to install.  Remember, the CD also acts as a LiveCD (if you did not select the alternate)  so you can run the entire OS from the CD.
